Santa Fe's Super Chief

The Chief is still the Chief !!!

From heavy wight era, light weight Pullman, streamline car to Amtrak's superliner, the historical Chief trains between Chicaco and Los Angeles is the most famous passenger trains in America. On Nov 14th, 1926, Santa Fe's Chief began to run between Chicago and L.A. On May 12th 1936, the Super Chief was officially born. It was a weekly, diesel-powered and all Pullman heavy weight trains. It ran from Chicago to LA only need 39 hours and 45 min, faster than the Amtrak's Southwest Chief, now!

Santa Fe remain the high quality passenger service all the time. They always introduced the best coaches into the service. You always can see the beautiful Warbonnet painted diesel locomotives lead a lot of bright streamline coach with dome car, dining car all the way!

The photo showed above is the well-known Santa Fe fleet. The right photo is EMD's F-unit, Santa Fe #347C. Dan Kelly took this photo in CA state RR museum. The left photo I took is a priviate owned ex-Santa Fe streamline coach. It is a very common style coach in Santa Fe's Chief trains.Although Amtrak took over almost all of those trains from Santa Fe, and there are not too many left, so you can not easily see them, but I found this coach in Orange county, CA in 1996 by chace. However, last summer, I can not find it again. It seemed be moved to another place.

1/3 Amtrak's passenger cars were from Santa Fe, when Amtrak was formed in 1971

When Amtrak was formed in 1971, 1/3 passenger coaches - nearly 450 were from Santa Fe.That included 140 coaches, 90 baggage cars, all Hi-level coaches, and many many trains. After Amtrak bought a lot of Amfleet and Superliner, those heritage cars became harder and harder to see on the route. Now, maybe only baggage cars are easily can be found on Amtrak routes. The above photos are the ex-Santa Fe trains. Left one is baggage car #1226, and the right one is #1222. You might want to ask me how can I know they are ex-Santa Fe's cars. The answer is so simple, because until today, I still can see a little "Santa Fe" letters on their bodies. They are painted in Amtrak color now; however, they are always the Santa Fe's family.

All of them were running on San Diegans trains. At the early Amtrak era, Santa Fe allowed Amtrak to remain the "Chief" name on those original route. However, Amtrak seemed not remain the good quality as the Santa Fe era. Then, Santa Fe announced " Santa Fe had reserved the right to withdraw the permission to use the Chief name should the quality of service provided by Amtrak on the trains so identified no longer reflect credit on Santa Fe." So, they asked Amtrak to drop the "Chief" name in 1974, and a new name Southwest limit appeared.

The new Chief: Southwest Chief was born in 1984

In 1980s, the Amtrak Southwest limited was running with new superliner cars. The service was improved(At least, not too bad), so the Chief name came back on Oct 28th 1984. The Southwest Chief was born!!!

Today, the Southwest Chief still runs between Chicago and Los Angeles as before, but the route is not "Santa Fe All the Way". From Chicago to Galesburg has switched to ex-BN route. The train number givin by Amtrak is #3 and #4. All of them are daily trains. #3 is from Chicago to Los Angeles, and #4 is the other way.

When I need to move from mid-west to California in 1997 summer, I planned to take the most popular way people did in Railroad golden age - To ride Chief train to go West!!! My trip was begun on Aug 3rd and finally arrive L.A. Union Station on Aug 5th. The #3 Southwest Chief trains was leaded by 4 diesels. The trains contained:

[Engine x4] + [Baggae Car ] + [Employee Car] + [Coach x4] + [Sightseer Lounge Car ]
[34] [76] [46] [806] + [1229] + [39031] + [34080] [34012] [34137][31530] + [33408]

+ [Dining Car] + [Sleeping Car x2] + [Box Car x7 ]
+ [38044] + [32106] [32088] + [1550] [1504] [1553] [1506] [1507] [1558] [1407]

The above photos are taken in my Southwest Chief trip. The left one is in Albuquerque, NM. The right one is in Los Angeles Union Station right after I arrived California. I am so tired at that time, and can fully understand why people like Santa Fe's FAST so much. It really not a good experience to stay on the trains for 3 days! I wish the FAST Chief can always run on the land, not slower slower and slower all the time. I won't ask too much. Just want Amtrak remain the old Santa Fe 1930s quality. I don't think people in 1990s can not do better than 1930s!!!

The Story of Santa Fe's Warbonnet

Santa Fe relyed on native American artwork for advertisement very much. The warbonnet paint scheme is based on Indian's " Head Dresses".

1937.6.4. The first warbonnet locomotive E1A, E1B delivered by EMC. This paint scheme was used for passenger diesel locomotives and some RDCs in Santa Fe.

1971.5.2. Santa Fe passenger service ended.

1972 Santa Fe started to use yellow/blue warbonnet paint scheme. For a long time, you can not see red/silver warbonnet paint scheme in America.

1989.7. Santa Fe president restored warbonnet paint scheme to FP45 , and announced new power also ordered in this colors.

1995 Santa Fe & Burlington Northern merged together, but BNSF promised they will maintain the warbonnet paint scheme.

Today, you still can see Santa Fe's CHIEF wear this warbonnet travelling all the way, because we know:
The Chief is still the Chief !!!

CNW/UP Trains in Ames, IA

Ames is a very good train-watching place. The mainline goes through Ames is part of famous Overland Route (UP/CNW/SP) in the railroad golden age. It was Chicago & North Western Railroad's important mainline. However, Union Pacific always want to have it, because it is the best route go westward from Chicago. Finally, C&NW was merged into Union Pacific in 1995. When I was in Ames during 1996-97, I still can very easily see CNW engines running through Ames, IA.

I took several photos in Ames, IA during my short stay there. You can check the following map for the locations 1 and 2.

Union Pacific's business train

I still remember how happy I was when I saw this train set in LA Union Station. This is not a normal train, and I have seen it only about 3 times in LA. Union Pacific's beautiful E9 and the coaches. Wowow.... good memory.

1998.3.29.(SUN)

Today, Paul and I plan to go down to Clinton, Iowa! I am so happy to have chance to go back Iowa again! This morning, I saw a CNW painted Fairbanks Morse engine which displays in Milton, WI on a magazine, so I ask Paul bring me to see it before our trip to Clinton. The CNW #10 Fairbanks Morse engine, originally from Minneapolis Northfield & souhtern; later was used by a short line, Central Wisconsin, and never owned by C&NW! However, it is very funny. It was in CNW color. Well, we appreciate they repaint it as traditional C&NW green and yellow color. And, you still can see "The route of Streamliner 400" on its body!

After the visit of the CNW color engine, we went on the "Free" way to Illinois. Yes! Illinois is so-called" HAPPY STATE"! We need to pay a lot of $ for the toll way. Finally, we arrive Rocelle IL. From Rocelle to Clinton, we follow the CNW east-west mainline , and want to see if we can get any CNW engines. The first spot we visited is Rochelle. Here is the location BNSF line and CNW line cross each other. When we arrived the diamond, I saw 6 cars by rail fan staying there to wait for trains. I think, because it is a sunny day, railfans go out for train watching!!! However, we didn't see any train pass the diamond, but catch one UP train in Rochelle ex-CNW depot.

About 13:40, we arrived Nelson. This is the place CNW mainline has a branch down to Madison, IL(not Madison, WI) and have track right to St Louise. We saw a UP train again, still no CNW loco!!! Before we arrived Clinton, we stop by a great spot where BN line cross the top of CNW line. This place is near the Mississippi River, and after that, we will enter IOWA!!! Yes! After we cross Mississippi river, the familiar slogan appeared: IOWA MAKE YOU SMILE!!! Yeah! I came back IOWA. When we just cross the river, the west bound train we have met just cross the river. We didn't well-prepare for it, but still get a good shot. Later, we visited the CNW clinton yard. Sadly, only see a #4622 CNW painted loco. Then, we went back to CNW Clinton depot. It is very beautiful, but the platform already removed. When we just arrived there, another east bound train ran by. IT IS A CNW C44-9W 8665 engine!!! I am very happy, but didn't well prepare for its coming, again. However, the photo turns out so good. I am so surprised!

The Mississippi river bridge must be the most important spot in Clinton area. This historical bridge was constructed in 1909. And it can turn around like a clock to let ship pass it! We sat down beside the river to get a east bound train, then moved to the bridge to get another shot. We wait, wait and wait --- No trains come. We are very sad. And as you know: the railfan rule is: Everytime when you give up, the train will just come after you leave! Do you believe this? In Taiwan, Japan, and America, they are all the same. Everytime I give up, the train will come. This time, Paul and I make a time to leave. We said after 17:00 if the train didn't come, we will leave. And we just say the railfan joke: Maybe we will see the train when we drive back and we are on the Mississippi river bridge. Ha! Ha! The railfan rule have been proved again. We heard a train horn sound just before 17:00, and the train crossed the bridge about 17:05. We didn't leave, and we saw the train!!! So, my opinion for you is: wait 5 more minutes when you decide to leave, and maybe you will get a bonus train!
