Ames is a very good train-watching place. The mainline goes through Ames is part of famous Overland Route (UP/CNW/SP) in the railroad golden age. It was Chicago & North Western Railroad's important mainline. However, Union Pacific always want to have it, because it is the best route go westward from Chicago. Finally, C&NW was merged into Union Pacific in 1995. When I was in Ames during 1996-97, I still can very easily see CNW engines running through Ames, IA.
I took several photos in Ames, IA during my short stay there. You can check the following map for the locations 1 and 2.
